Francesca Ciraldo successfully defended her doctoral thesis in Erlangen

Francesca Ciraldo successfully defended her doctoral thesis on 10th April 2019. Francesca carried out her project at the Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, under supervision of Prof Aldo R. Boccaccini, in the field of ion doped mesoporous bioactive glasses for antibacterial applications.

Francesco Gucci, Pablo Lopez Iscoa and Acacio Rincon Romero successfully defended their doctoral thesis

Francesco Gucci (“Current-assisted sintering of thermoelectric materials”, Queen Mary University of London), Pablo Lopez Iscoa (“Design, processing and characterization of glass fibers and coatings for health care industries”, Politecnico di Torino) and Acacio Rincon Romero (“Development of low-cost waste-derived glass-ceramics for energy saving and recovery”, Università degli Studi di Padova) successfully defended his thesis in February.

Bhuvanesh Sirnivasan successfully defended his doctoral thesis on 11th December 2018. Bhuvanesh, carried out his doctoral thesis at the University of Rennes 1, under the supervision of Prof Bruno Bureau and Catherine Boussard-Pledel.

Min Yu successfully defended her doctoral thesis in London


Min Yu, who carried out her doctoral thesis at Nanoforce and Queen Mary University, London, under the supervision of Prof Mike Recce, successfully defended her thesis on Monday 24th September 2018. We congratulate Min for her achievement and wish her all the best in her future career.

Nicoletta Toniolo successfully defended her doctoral thesis in Erlangen


Nicoletta Toniolo, who carried out her doctoral thesis at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, under academic supervision of Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, successfully defended her thesis on 27th July 2018. Her thesis entitled: “Novel geopolymers incorporating silicate waste” was carried out in collaboration with Prof. E. Bernardo (University of Padova, Italy) and with industrial partner SASIL S.p.A., Italy Already several scientific papers have resulted from Nicoletta’s thesis. We congratulate Nicoletta for her achievement and wish her all the best in her future career.

Nicoletta Toniolo (Institute of Biomaterials, FAU, Germany) wins oral presentation award at international conference in Portugal


Ms Nicoletta Toniolo, doctoral student at the Institute of Biomaterials (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg) under supervision of Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, won 3rd prize for best oral preseantation at the “2nd International conference on alkali activated materials and geopolymers”, held on 27th May – 1st June 2018 in Tomar (Portugal), organised in the framework of the Engineering Conferences International (ECI) series. The prize was sponsored by the Journal of the European Ceramics Society Trust (JECS Trust). Nicoletta was also the recipient of a JECS Trust travel grant to attend the conference.

Professor Aldo R. Boccacccini received Turner Award from Interntational Commission on Glass

Professor Aldo R. Boccaccini, Head of the Institute of Biomaterials at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, received the Turner Award 2016 from The International Commission on Glass (ICG) in recognition of his active participation and support of the activities of the ICG’s Technical Committee TC04 “Bioglasses” combined with his outstanding contributions to the field of bioactive glasses, from processing to applications. Introduced in 2002, the prize recognizes those who have made a noteworthy contribution to the ICG Technical Committees. Boccaccini has been a major force in TC04 from the establishment of this international technical committee in 2005, being one of the initial members of TC04. Boccaccini is also the founding editor and first editor-in-chief of the open access journal “Biomedical Glasses“, which is endorsed by the technical committee TC04.
